Kosher and Halal documentation

Because Dr. Garber’s Natural Solutions uses organotherapy remedies in its formulas, some people are concerned with the Kosher or Halal implications of taking them. Although they are not certified Kosher or Halal, it is permissible for observant Jews and Muslims to take the formulas. The following explains why:

Kosher

This is based on the concept of batel b'shishim. (see Chulin 98b.) It is derived from the sacrifice a Nazir gives to the Kohen that ends his service as a Nazir (Num. 6). Since the part of the animal, the zroah (leg), is sanctified and allowed only to be eaten by a Kohen, how then can the rest of the animal be allowed to be eaten by the Nazir since it's all cooked together? The answer is that since the rest of animal is 60 times bigger than the size of the zroah, it is batel b'shishim and so the animal is permitted to be eaten by a non-Kohen. This principle is then used for other issues of kashrut as long as the taste of the non-kosher part is hidden. As such, it is generally considered that if an ingredient is present at less than 1/60 concentration it is considered to not be there. The most concentrated organotherapy remedy in any Dr. Garber’s Natural Solutions formula is at a 5C potency, or a concentration of 1/10,000,000,000. Halal

In Islam, the guidelines are qualitative rather than quantitative. If an impurity or incidental matter in otherwise Halal food can not be detected by smell, taste or sight, the impurity is too small to nullify the Halal status. For medicinal purpose, the restrictions are quite lax compared to foods and drinks. (see Qur’an 2:173, 6:145, 16:115.) According to Dr. Muhammad Munir Chaudry, President of the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America, most Muslims may use such products but the IFANCA will not certify a product as Halal if a Haram (unlawful) ingredient is intentionally added. With regards to alcohol content, it has been determined that the level of dilution for a product to be acceptable is less than one part in 1,000. Again, the restrictions are more lenient when it comes to products used for medicinal purposes but, if this still presents a problem for the observant, the alcohol in Dr. Garber’s Natural Solutions may be easily evaporated off with no adverse effect to the formula’s efficacy.
