Rebuilding After the Flames: Holistic Recovery and Resilience Post-Wildfire

The wildfires currently ravaging Los Angeles have created unprecedented challenges, with smoke blanketing the city and air quality reaching hazardous levels. In light of these unprecedented fires, leading to widespread devastation and evacuations, it's crucial to now focus on holistic recovery and resilience, more than ever.

While immediate safety measures are paramount, the aftermath of such events requires dedicated attention to physical, emotional, and environmental healing. For Helen and me, this hits close to home—we lived and worked in Santa Monica for many years, and many of our friends still call the LA area home. Seeing these events unfold is truly devastating.

For guidance on protecting yourself and your pets during active wildfires, please refer to our previous blogs: "Wildfires and Us: What to Do" and "Wildfires and Animals: What to Do"

This article provides comprehensive strategies for restoring well-being and building resilience in the wake of such challenging times.

 1. Cleansing Your Body: Detox and Rejuvenation

Exposure to smoke and toxins during wildfires can leave lingering effects on your body, especially on your respiratory and immune systems. Detoxifying the body after such exposure is essential to help restore balance and promote recovery.

  • Lung-Supporting Herbs: Drinking mullein, thyme, or marshmallow root tea can help soothe your lungs, reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract, and promote mucus clearance, making them an excellent choice for wildfire recovery.

  • Show Your Liver Some Love: Your liver plays a key role in detoxification. Support it with foods and drinks like milk thistle or dandelion root tea, beetroot, garlic, turmeric, and leafy greens. These help your liver process toxins more effectively and protect against oxidative stress. Also, incorporate healthy fats like avocados and walnuts to support bile production.

  • Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration supports kidney function and helps flush toxins through urine. Add a slice of lemon for an extra detoxifying boost.

  • Keep Pathways of Elimination Open: Your body eliminates toxins through sweat, urine, bowel movements, and the lymphatic system. Ensure these pathways remain open for optimal detoxification. Tips:

    • Include high-fiber foods like flaxseeds, chia seeds, and vegetables to promote healthy digestion.

    • Engage in light exercise/movement, a sauna, or or even a warm bath with Epsom salts to encourage sweating.

    • Practice dry brushing or gua sha to stimulate lymphatic drainage.

2. Healing the Mind: Emotional Recovery Post-Wildfire

Wildfires can trigger intense anxiety and trauma. Addressing emotional health is essential for full recovery:

  • Mindfulness Practices: Try yin yoga or guided meditation to calm your nervous system.

  • Stimulate the Vagus Nerve: Practices like humming, gargling, cold water immersion, or deep belly breathing can activate the vagus nerve, which helps regulate inflammation and supports a calm, balanced nervous system.

  • Emotional Support Remedies: My Anxiety Relief and Mood Boost bioformulas can help manage stress and lift your spirits naturally.

  • Community Connections: Share your experience with others. Rebuilding together can provide emotional solace and a sense of purpose.

3. Caring for Your Pets Post-Wildfire

Our pets and animals are equally affected by the fallout of wildfires. Smoke inhalation, stress from the chaos, and disrupted routines can leave them anxious and unwell. Here's how you can help:

  • Soothe Anxiety: Just like humans, pets feel stress during wildfires. Our Canine Calm & Happy bioformula is a gentle, natural way to ease anxiety in dogs during high-stress situations. For equines, our Equine Calm & Happy formula is designed to bring a sense of calm and balance.

  • Protect Their Lungs: Animals exposed to wildfire smoke can experience respiratory distress. Keep them indoors with clean air as much as possible. For horses, our Equine Lung & Allergy bioformula supports healthy respiratory function and helps mitigate the effects of smoke inhalation. Schedule a check-up with your veterinarian to ensure their lungs are clear.

  • Provide Safe Spaces: Create a calm and quiet area for your pets to retreat to. For larger animals like horses, ensure their stables or shelters are well-ventilated and protected from smoke exposure.

4. Protecting Your Environment: Creating a Safe Space

Restoring your home environment after exposure to wildfire smoke is crucial for long-term health. Here are some practical steps to create a safer, healthier space:

  • Invest in High-Quality Air Filtration: Use a HEPA or CARB-certified air filter to reduce indoor air pollutants and keep your living space as smoke-free as possible. These filters are highly effective at capturing fine particulate matter, including the toxins found in wildfire smoke.

  • Clean and Dust Regularly: Wipe down surfaces with a damp cloth and vacuum carpets and upholstery with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter. This helps to remove residual particles that may have settled indoors.

  • Add Air-Purifying Plants: Certain indoor plants, such as peace lilies, snake plants, and bamboo palms, can naturally improve air quality. While they’re not a replacement for mechanical air filters, they add an extra layer of purification and a calming aesthetic to your space.

  • Address Soft Furnishings: Smoke particles can cling to curtains, bedding, and other soft materials. Launder these items thoroughly or consider professional cleaning services for larger pieces like rugs and upholstered furniture.

  • Keep Windows and Doors Sealed: If outdoor air quality remains poor, ensure your home is sealed to prevent smoke infiltration. Use draft stoppers, weather stripping, or towels at the base of doors and windows.

  • Humidify Your Space: Using a humidifier can help prevent your indoor air from becoming too dry, which can irritate your respiratory system. Adding essential oils like eucalyptus or lavender to your humidifier may also provide calming and lung-supportive benefits.

5. Building Resilience for the Future

The emotional toll of experiencing or witnessing wildfires can be overwhelming. Supporting your mental health is just as vital as addressing physical concerns. Prepare for what’s next by strengthening your mind and body:

  • Emergency Readiness: Keep an updated emergency kit with essentials for both humans and pets, including holistic remedies.

  • Reach Out for Support: Don’t hesitate to lean on your community. Talking to friends, family, or a therapist can provide emotional relief and a sense of connection.

  • Express Creativity: Journaling, painting, or playing music can provide an outlet for processing difficult emotions and finding solace in self-expression.

  • Stay Active: Physical movement, even something gentle like walking, releases endorphins, which can improve mood and help alleviate feelings of stress or depression.
