When people don't feel well, it's natural to want relief as quickly as possible.
A headache.
Poor sleep.
Digestive discomfort.
Joint stiffness.
Low energy.
Most of us immediately ask the same question:
"How do I make this go away?"
It's understandable.
No one enjoys feeling uncomfortable.
But after more than 40 years in clinical practice, I've come to believe there's another question that's just as important.
"Why is my body producing this symptom in the first place?"
That simple shift in thinking changed the way I practice medicine.
It also became one of the foundations of my philosophy: Heal Without Harm™.
Symptoms Are Messages, Not Just Problems
One of the greatest misconceptions in healthcare is that symptoms are always the problem.
In reality, symptoms are often signs that the body is responding to something.
A fever may reflect an immune response.
Fatigue may signal that the body needs cellular recovery.
Inflammation can be part of the body's repair process.
Stress can affect sleep, digestion, hormone balance, and mood.
These responses are not necessarily evidence that the body is "broken."
Often, they are evidence that the body is working incredibly hard to maintain balance under difficult circumstances.
That doesn't mean symptoms should be ignored or that medical evaluation isn't important when appropriate. Rather, it means symptoms can provide valuable clues about what the body may need.
Looking Beyond the Symptom
Imagine hearing your smoke detector go off.
You could remove the batteries.
The sound would stop.
But the question remains:
Why was the alarm going off in the first place?
Our bodies often work the same way.
If we focus only on quieting the signal without understanding what triggered it, we may miss an opportunity to address a deeper imbalance.
Throughout my career, I've tried to approach patients with curiosity rather than assumptions.
Instead of asking only:
"What diagnosis fits?"
I also ask:
"What is this body trying to accomplish?"
That question often leads to a very different conversation.
The Body Is Remarkably Intelligent
One of the reasons I remain passionate about natural medicine is that it starts from a place of respect for the body's innate intelligence.
Every second of every day, your body is regulating countless processes you never have to think about.
Breathing.
Healing tissues.
Balancing hormones.
Repairing cells.
Fighting infections.
Maintaining body temperature.
Digesting food.
When these systems are functioning well, we rarely notice them.
When they're struggling, symptoms may appear.
Rather than viewing the body as something that's constantly failing us, I believe we should first recognize how hard it's working on our behalf.
Supporting Instead of Fighting

This perspective has influenced every bioformula I've developed.
The goal has never been to force the body into a particular response whenever possible.
Instead, the goal has been to support the body's own ability to regulate, adapt, and recover.
That philosophy is reflected in our guiding principle:
Heal Without Harm.
For me, that means asking a different question before reaching for a solution:
"How can I best support the body's natural processes?"
Curiosity Is One of the Most Powerful Tools in Healthcare
Some of the greatest lessons I've learned over the years didn't come from textbooks.
They came from patients.
People whose stories challenged me to think differently.
People who reminded me that every symptom exists within the context of a whole person.
The more carefully we listen, the more we begin to understand that health isn't simply the absence of symptoms.
It's the body's ability to adapt, recover, and remain resilient despite the challenges of everyday life.
Listening Before Reacting
The next time your body feels different, consider pausing before asking only how to make the symptom disappear.
Instead, ask yourself:
-
Am I getting enough restorative sleep?
-
Has stress been higher than usual?
-
Am I nourishing my body well?
-
Am I moving regularly?
-
Have I been giving myself time to recover?
Sometimes the answers to those questions reveal far more than the symptom itself.
A Different Way to Think About Healing
For more than four decades, my goal has never been simply to help people feel better today.
It's been to help support the body's ability to function well tomorrow, next year, and decades from now.
That is the heart of Heal Without Harm.
It's also why our protocols focus on supporting multiple interconnected systems rather than looking at health through a single lens.
Because lasting wellness isn't built by chasing one symptom after another.
It's built by supporting the whole person.

This idea was one of many discussed during my recent conversation with Eugénie Krüger on the Homeopathy Hangout podcast, where we explored the body's remarkable capacity to adapt, the philosophy behind Heal Without Harm, and the patient stories that shaped my clinical approach.

Supporting Your Body Starts With the Right Foundation
If this philosophy resonates with you, our three signature protocols offer a more comprehensive approach to supporting your health:
Staying Well supports immune resilience and your body's natural defenses.
Resting Well supports emotional balance, healthy stress adaptation, and restorative sleep.
Aging Well supports bone and joint health, metabolic balance, and vitality as you age.
Rather than focusing on a single symptom, each protocol brings together three complementary bioformulas, reflecting the same whole-body approach that has guided my practice for more than 40 years.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Dr. Garber say symptoms are messages?
Symptoms can reflect the body's response to stress, injury, infection, or imbalance. Understanding what may be contributing to those symptoms can help guide a more comprehensive approach to supporting health.
Does this mean symptoms should be ignored?
No. Persistent, severe, or concerning symptoms should always be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare professional. Symptoms can provide valuable information and deserve thoughtful attention.
What does "Heal Without Harm" mean?
Heal Without Harm is Dr. Garber's philosophy of supporting the body's natural ability to regulate, adapt, and recover whenever possible while respecting its innate intelligence.
Why does Dr. Garber focus on supporting multiple systems?
The body's systems are interconnected. Stress, sleep, digestion, immune function, hormones, and metabolism influence one another, so supporting overall balance may be more beneficial than looking at isolated concerns alone.
