Formula Origin

“My wife and I moved to New Mexico, aside from having fallen in love with Santa Fe, to be able to bring horses into our lives in a more all-encompassing way.

Horses, on the one hand, are big, strong, magnificent creatures. On the other hand, they can be quite delicate, prone to all kinds of maladies (that seem to always come on in the middle of the night or on a Sunday.)

My first EQUINE bioformula, Bone & Joint, had already proved successful for navicular horses and horses with all sorts of musculoskeletal problems. It was time to formulate new ones. One of our horses came to us with a respiratory condition that he had developed from his previous ten years at a commercial boarding facility. He was older and also had some arthritis. He was already taking Bone & Joint and that, along with good chiropractic care and having 24/7 access to the pasture where he could move around as he desired made that a non-issue. But what to do about his breathing problem?

I mixed up a combination of my Lung Health and Enviro Defense bioformulas for people and gave it to him. He loved it and would just lick it right out of my hand. Within 20 minutes his breathing would normalize. [ Lung & Allergy ] After that I started adding it to his feed and only occasionally needed to give him extra by hand.

Another thing about horses is that they are flight animals. They are always on the lookout for the monster that is hiding behind that next bush and ready to flee. There’s a saying that there are only two things that scare horses: things that move and things that don’t move. Sure, some horses are the “been there, done that” type that don’t seem to get upset about much, but even they are always on the alert. Just watch their ears.

Next up then was to concoct a bioformula to calm the anxious equine, something to take the edge off and relax. Combining ingredients from Anxiety Relief and Mood Boost bioformulas for people was an effective combination [ Calm & Happy ]. Soaking a cookie or two in the formula, or licking it from your hand, before a trail ride makes both horse and rider happier.

In my travels to different barns as an equine chiropractor I get to see a lot. Skin problems are pretty common and have varied causes, from allergic reactions to insect bites, to fungal infections and parasites. Regardless of cause, and even with topically-applied treatments, an essential approach to these conditions is to treat them from within. I created an EQUINE Skin & Allergy bioformula based on the success that my CANINE Skin & Allergy has had since 2017. This bioformula supports healthy skin and strengthens the immune system to minimize the equine’s reaction to any of the different causative agents.” Dr. Garber, D.C., Ph.D.

Gemmotherapy

Blackberry Vine shoots (Rubus fructicosus)

These shoots stimulate osteoblastic activity—meaning, they help in the formation of bone (osteoblasts are cells that form bone tissue).

Giant Redwood shoots (Sequoia dendrogiganteum): © Aron Levin-Wikipedia

Gemmotherapy

Giant Redwood shoots (Sequoia gigantea)

Giant Redwood shoots also help stimulate osteoblastic activity. They have also been shown to effectively increase the absorption of calcium.

European Grapevine buds (Vitis vinifera): © The Spruce

Gemmotherapy

European Grape Vine buds (Vitis vinifera)

These buds act on the deformative processes such as osteophyte formation (essentially bone spurs—the bony lumps that grow on the bones in the spine or around joints, especially when that bone or joint has been damaged) and allows for a fuller range of motion.

Gemmotherapy

Mountain Pine buds (Pinus montana)

Mountain Pine buds act on bony articulations anywhere in the body, and have a regenerative effect on equine bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. These buds also help relieve joint pain.

Red Spruce buds (Abies pectinata): © Carach Nurseries

Gemmotherapy

Red Spruce buds (Abies pectinata)

These buds promote the absorption of calcium and mineral balance.

Wild Woodvine shoots (Ampelopsis weitchii): © Vendita Piante

Gemmotherapy

Wild Woodvine shoots (Ampelopsis weitchii)

These shoots will regenerate cartilage and repair and reconstruct damaged joints. They also help stimulate flexibility and acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Lithotherapy

Calcaire de Versaille

This Litho makes calcium more available for assimilation and easier to absorb into the bones.

Lithotherapy

Quadratic Feldspar

Quadratic Feldspar acts effectively on most inflammatory processes that affect the joints and related structures.

Organotherapy

Cartilage extracts

This tissue extract normalizes the cellular processes of hyaline-based connective tissue. The hyaline cartilage is the most common type of cartilage and lines the joints and caps at the ends of an animal’s bones. Alone, this cartilage has no direct blood supply and has limited capacity to repair itself, so this potentized extract helps the repair of connective tissue in the bones and cartilage.

Organotherapy

Parathyroid extracts

This extract is taken from the Parathyroid glands. These glands produce parathyroid hormones, which play a key role in the regulation of calcium levels in the blood. This Organotherapy is used for its ability to maintain blood levels of ionized calcium by stimulating the release of parathormone and calcitonin as needed by the equine’s body. This extract is what really moves calcium in and out of the bones for use in the body when it needs calcium for muscle contraction and for functionality. If there’s not enough calcium in the blood, this extract releases a hormone that pulls it out of the bone.
